We craft quiet, light-filled architectural spaces.
Operating from our studio in Oakham, we build contemporary glass extensions, sensitive barn restorations, and structural masonry utilizing local Clipsham stone, green oak framing, and breathable lime materials.
The Tactile Workbench
We work with a highly intentional palette of local materials. Click each medium below to explore its structural purpose, local provenance, and characteristics on the workbench table.
Clipsham Limestone
Our local limestone is highly praised for its durability and rich, honeyed hue. Quarried just miles north of Oakham, we hand-dress and chisel each block using heritage techniques, blending historic stone facades seamless with modern glass components.
Recent Portfolios
A collection of thoughtfully completed interventions in Rutland, Northamptonshire, and South Lincolnshire conservation areas.
The Garden Room
A modern structural glass extension paired with a hand-dressed Clipsham stone base, maximizing natural light while preserving a Grade-II listed garden cottage.
The Oak-Framed Barn
A comprehensive restoration of an 18th-century threshing barn. Featuring exposed traditional green oak scissor-trusses and insulated lime-plaster panels.
The Plaster Studio
An interior architectural studio retreat showcasing minimal joinery, micro-cement flooring, and hand-applied raw lime mortar finishes for a quiet atmosphere.
A deliberate, slower pace of building.
At Stone & Stem, we oppose the culture of rapid, standardized housing. We design and construct buildings with an attention to detail that feels tactile, quiet, and enduring. Our team is intentionally small, allowing us to manage only a small handful of bespoke commissions each year.
Every joint is chiselled by hand, every piece of oak is selected for its character, and every wall is finished with pigments sourced from local earths. It is building treated not as an assembly line, but as a studio practice.
